POSITION SUMMARY

This is a part-time seasonal temporary assignment and candidates will be selected and processed
through Proper Solutions Staffing. If selected for consideration, a representative from the staffing
agency will contact the candidate.

Day Camp Unit Director
This assignment involves organizing and participating in the daily operation of the Summer Day Camp program in accordance with established schedules and standards, exercising independent judgment in solving program activity problems, and supervision of Unit Leaders and Camp Aides. The ability to work with others, including children, is extremely important.

Day Camp Unit Leader
This assignment involves providing general assistance in conducting youth recreational program activities for the Youth Day Camp Program. The ability to work with children is extremely important.

Selected candidates will not be employed by the City of Palm Springs and will be referred to Proper Solutions for employment and placement in the Department of Parks and Recreation for the 2021 program.

Pay $14/hr-$15/hr

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Day Camp Unit Director

  • Plan, organize, supervise and participate in scheduled sessions of Youth Day Camp.
  • Organize athletics, crafts, social, and instructional activities. Supervise and participate in various games and sporting events.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organizing and conducting public recreation programs.
  • First Aid/CPR practices and techniques. Record keeping and reporting procedures.
  • Instructional techniques and methods for recreational programs that serve a variety of interests and abilities.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and lead individuals and groups in recreational activities.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Perform related duties as required.


Day Camp Unit Leader

  • Assist in conducting and participating in group recreation activities.
  • Assist on field trips and outings.
  • Assist in preparing recreation facilities for group activities.
  • Issue and collect recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with the proper use and care of assigned facilities and equipment.
  • Knowledge of recreational activities used for youth programs.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Learn and perform assigned tasks.
  • Instruct and lead group recreation activities.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Perform related duties as required.



MINIMUM AND PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Day Camp Unit Director

Experience:
One (1) year previous experience working with children in a youth activities or learning environment is preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older and possess valid California Driver' s License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain First Aid and CPR Certification, during the day camp training starting from June 3, 2021 is required.
  • Must be available to work from June 14, 2021 through July 30, 2021.
  • Able to work at various Recreation Center locations including Palm Springs Leisure Center, Demuth Community Center, and the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center.



Day Camp Unit Leader
Experience:
Previous experience working in a youth activities environment preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be 16 years or older and have a valid work permit. Possession of, or ability to obtain current First Aid and CPR Certification during the day camp training starting from June 3, 2021 is required.
  • Must be available to work from June 14, 2021 through July 30, 2021.
  • Able to work at various Recreation Center locations including Palm Springs Leisure Center, Demuth Community Center, and the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center.


Selected candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation, physical and drug screen.

Working Conditions:
Work includes indoor and outdoor environments during summer months. Applicants must be able to work the 12 week program, including training week and be available from June 14, 2021 through
July 30, 2021.
(Training will commence from June 3, 2021 onwards)
