Job Description

Our client is looking for a part-time Park Ranger to join their team to assist the Parks & Recreation Department in facilitating the public usage of municipal open spaces, public parks, athletic fields, courts, recreational facilities, and community centers; to patrol and inspect parks, playgrounds, and facilities to promote safety and help with the enforcement of City rules, ordinances, codes, permits, and policies; to promote positive engagement and serve as a public-facing ambassador for parks and recreational activities and programs; to support city-wide special events; and to perform related work. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and the Director of Parks & Recreation.

 

Essential and General Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a courteous public ambassador, providing information about parks and recreational programs to the public, city departments, agencies, organizations, and stakeholder groups.

  • Participate in community engagement activities, conduct tours, community outreach, and help administer surveys to collect feedback.

  • Conduct daily inspections of parks, grounds, amenities, recreational facilities, and open spaces by vehicle and/or on foot.

  • Monitor issuance of municipal park permits, special event permits, and facility use permits for code compliance.

  • Coordinate work orders for multiple parks, facilities, community centers and special events; report problems concerning safety, security, sanitary conditions, and maintenance needs.

  • Post signage and flyers.

  • Document and report permit violations, abandoned items on city property, trash, and incidents of graffiti and vandalism.

  • Submit and monitor work orders to ensure timely maintenance and repair of parks and recreational facilities, including lights, equipment, signage, grounds, landscaping, etc.

  • Open and/or secure parks and recreational facilities, restrooms, and gates.

  • Operate equipment and assist with recreation event-related set-up and tear-downs.

  • Prepare daily logs and maintenance observation reports, and other reports as required.

  • Provide administrative support including answering phones, acting as a courier, conducting research, and providing general information to the community.

  • Identify, remove, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for the public.

  • Assist in emergencies such as fire and hazardous weather conditions.

  • Assist in emergencies involving injury or illness by notifying proper authorities; conduct basic first aid; administer automated external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when required.

  • Follow safe working practices and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • General principles and practices of managing parks and facilities; patrols and inspections; recreation programming; park permitting; and special event planning.

  • Principles of customer service, community engagement, and public relations.

  • Methods, best practices, and equipment used in public parks, facilities, and community centers.

  • City policies, procedures, regulations, codes, and ordinances as they relate to parks and recreation.

  • Preparation of data-driven reports, surveys, and record keeping.

  • Safe work practices and safety precautions.

 

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply relevant regulations, policies, ordinances, and procedures.

  • Exercise tact, self-restraint, and good judgment.

  • Safely follow directions, take appropriate courses of action in emergencies.

  • Anticipate and solve problems.

  • Write log entries, reports, messages, complete forms and records, and maintain records and files on work performed.

  • Operate a motor vehicle.

  • Maintain AED, First Aid, and CPR certifications.

  • Provide information and resources to patrons.

  • Use a variety of equipment, supplies, and materials.

  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

 

Experience and Training

Experience: Six (6) months of experience in customer service focused environment, including parks and recreation, public relations, planning, operations, maintenance, public service, or a related field. Training: High School Diploma or equivalent. License/Certificate:

  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

  • Possession of a valid CPR certification.

  • Possession of a valid First Aid certification.

  • Possession of a valid AED certification.

 

Environmental Conditions:

  • Field and office environment; travel from site to site; exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust moving objects/vehicles, and inclement weather conditions.

 

Physical Conditions:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, standing, or driving a vehicle for prolonged periods; ability to bend, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb; heavy, moderate, or light lifting pulling, pushing and holding equipment essential for the job.

 

 

Must be able to pass a background check, physical and drug screen, and have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

 

 

Part Time (30 hrs per week): Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

Pay = $17/hr
